Egmond® Typhoon, Sunburst
- Sold
Uilke Egmond a former railway man, started his music shop in 1932 in Valkenswaard in Holland. He gave violin lessons and sold some instruments there. He moved to Eindhoven around 1934 and opened a shop there.Together with his sons Gerard, Jaap and Dick, who joined him during World War II (seemingly they didn't have anything better to do), he started building guitars. During the sixties The Egmond Company became one of the biggest guitar manufacturers in Europe. In 1961 they opened a factory in Best. In the early seventies the company moved again to Boxtel. By the time the Egmond brand called it quits later on in the seventies, unable to complete with Japanese production, Egmond had made many thousands of instruments that had been distributed all over the world. Early on Egmond were making acoustic guitars but they picked up on the explosion of electric guitars with semi-hollow models in the '50s and sold body electrics in the '60s. George Harrison's first gutiar was an Egmond; Sir Paul played one in his pre-Quarrymen days. Brian May too had an Egmond as a starter guitar. That these subsequent stars owned these instruments was not so much a testmanent to the quality of the guitars but to their affordability.
Most of the Egmond guitars that were made were for the European market and only a few made their way to the USA, so this is relatively rare. What we have here is a plywood body model with a bolt on maple neck, and three pickups with individual switching. The guitar is listed in an ad that Egmond did for the opening of their Best factory in 1961, firmly planting this guitar right around 1960 (the ad is shown in the picture gallery). However, there isn't much more we have been able to find out about the history of this guitar. The many detailed pictures give you a good look at this instrument. It is in remarkable shape for a 50 year old guitar. It clearly has a nitrocellulose finish which has checked beautifully. The action is good for what was a budget instrument. And beyond that we can only tell you how it plays. Perhaps because of the three pickups and the body shape, there is a definite Strat vibe from this guitar. Although the size of a humbucker, these pickups have the sound of single coils, and with the bolt-on neck, substantial '50s neck and light, resonant body, this is more like a Fender than anything else.
