ESP® Standard Surveyor II, Maple - Sold

ESP first used the Surveyor name decades ago for a passive Precision-style bass with a bridge-position J pickup. The Surveyor-II aims for more versatility with active EMG pickups, onboard EQ, and a coil-tap switch that gives the bridge-position Music Man style pickup a J-like single-coil option. The Surveyor-II fills the space between the ESP’s value-oriented Korean- and Indonesian-built LTD series and its remarkable custom shop creations. According to ESP, that means the Surveyor-II gets higher-quality woods and hardware and more hands-on attention to the fretwork and final setup.

The Surveyor-II is a shiny and simple-looking bass, with ornamentation limited to the 12th fret’s opalescent ESP inlay. The chrome hardware, gleaming frets, and stained and polished maple fingerboard complement the body’s glossy maple finish. Overall, the build quality isexcellent. The U-shape neck is invitingly playable; it is narrow at the nut and meaty enough to grasp, but not too chunky. The fretwork is top-notch. Picked, slapped, or fingerstyle, the Surveyor-II with flat EQ had a sonorous and clear voice whether played soft or hard. With the EQ, you can get a variety of sounds from old school muck to spic-and-span sparkle.
