Micro-FretsĀ® Signature - Sold

The Micro-Frets guitar company, based in Frederick, Maryland, made an extended line of unusual to downright wacky guitars from the mid '60s through to the mid '70s when the company was wound down, a few years after the death of the company's founder Ralph Jones. Aside from the shapes of the guitars, the thing that made these unique was the patented adjustable nut design. This allowed the string height and string scale length to be adjusted at the nut, something akin to a tunematic bridge but on the headstock. This design took intonation to a completly new level for the time and really hasn't been surpassed since.

What we have here is one of the less wacky models: the Signaure. This one is from around1969. The body is actually made from two halves, a front half and a back half and we are guessing that there is at least a partial cavity between the two. It has a double cutaway and two single coil pickups with just a single volume and tone control. One of the switches is a pickup selector and the other engages a capacitor for a top-end tone cut, probably designed for a quick jump from lead to rhythm.

This is a farily light guitar and quite resonant. The pickups have a P90 flavor to them, single coil in nature with a little extra edge over a Strat or a Tele. The sounds are definitely more in Fender territory than, say a Gibson Les Paul Special. So this is quite a special, rare vintage piece from a now long-gone American manufacturer.
