AmpegĀ® Rocket R-12
- Sold
Before the infamous Reverberocket there was just - the Rocket. Manufactured in Woodside, Queens, New York, between 1958 and 1961, the Rocket was the slightly bigger (and much rarer) brother of the now much sought after Jet, having a reverb depth control and three inputs rather than two, but otherwise the circuit was the same. Apart from the handle this one is all original and in splendid working order having just been serviced. This has a Jensen Concert Alnico-5 speaker and a tube complement of two 65L7s, two 6V6s and one 5Y3.
So, this sounds just like a Jet and similar to a Reverbrocket if you are familiar with either of those. It certainly has the brash forthrightness of other well known Ampeg amps rather than, say, the lushness of a similar period Fender Princeton (it's closest Fender equivalent). It has a great clean tube sound up until you get beyond half way when the amp begins to compress and it certainly distorts as you would expect in the last few places on the volume dial. And with a nominal 12 watts this is not going to take your head off but it will get you through small club gigs.
