KentĀ® Kent Polaris III, Sunburst - Sold

The Kent name was one of the many less-well-known brands created by Japanese manufacturers in the 1960s as they jumped on the bandwagon of the electric guitar craze. The Polaris III featured here was the top end of the Polaris line, which included the Polaris I and Polaris II, each cunningly named for the number of pickups sported. This one is from the mid '60s. It has a simple, operational tremolo. The controls are three volumes and one tone, along with a pickup selector that offers all the options of a modern Strat. The guitar has some of the looks of a Strat and indeed it does sound Stratish but still has a sound of its own. It plays and sounds like the inexpensive Japanese knock-off that it is, which, if that is what you are after, can be a refreshing change from the rather normal sounds you would get from a new instrument at this price. And of course this is a vintage piece.

A Polaris guitar was supposedly played by Bruce Springsteen early on (strangely is not still playing one) and we know that Lee Ranaldo from Sonic Youth used one for many years as a slide guitar.

This guitar was surely named after the Polaris missile, which was a two-stage, solid-fuel, nuclear-armed, submarine-launched, ballistic missile built during the cold war by Lockheed for the United States Navy, in service during the early '60s. But we could be wrong.
