Sano® Hi Fi
- Vintage
We estimate that this amp is from the early/mid '60s. It has a single 15" blue Utah speaker (which looks fabulous when you get the back off; you can see it in the photos) and has the classic silver 'refrigerator' handle. The tube complement is one 12AY7, two 12AX7s, one ECC83, one 5U4GB, two 6L6s and two 12AU7As. The controls are simple enough, volume, bass, treble and depth and speed for the tremolo. In addition there is a 'Stereophonic Input' which was specially for accordion (come on you accordion players, let's see you in here trying this thing out). There is a foot switch jack for engaging the tremolo (but the amp does not have a foot switch).
This amp starts out with plenty of headroom as there is a fair bit more power in this amp than some of the other Sanos. The 15" speaker gives the amp a lower-mid emphasis (a boomy wamp as someone in the store described it). If you are familiar with Ampeg amps then that would give you a starting point for how this sounds. It has a brashness that you certainly don't get in Fender amps. It is clean up beyond halfway. But as you get towards full power the amp compresses and you can get a great grind between eight and ten. The volume controls provide a wide range of sound to the point where this can also serve well as a low-power bass amp. The 15" speaker handles the lows all the way down, it just doesn't get too loud. Perfect for home use and ideal if you are looking for a dual purpose amp. Just don't expect to use it with your bass for a gig.
