Gretsch® Gretsch Electromatic Standard - Sold

This is one of a variety of amps that Gretsch produced back in the mid 1950s that went under the name 'Electromatic', this being the 'Standard' model. We believe that this one is from 1955 and from what we can find out about them, not many were made, so this is exeedingly rare. The amp was in bad shape when we got it and so it was in need of a full service. The electronics have been gone through completely and it has all new caps and tubes, plus a three-prong plug. Whilst we have the original speaker (which has a damaged cone and comes with the amp) this is fitted with a Weber 8" replacement. The baffle board has also been replaced. The tube complement is: 6SL7GT. 6SL7WGT in the preamp section, 6V6GT in the power section, and a 5Y3GT rectifier. The original grillcloth is an interesting weave: something akin to a velvet on a metal mesh - not seen so much these days.

The controls are simple: tone and volume. This thing gets going when the amp is turned up above half way and has a very sweet crunch, topping out at about 5 watts of quality '50s tube overdrive.
